Grow Through It Counseling Services provides Depression And Anxiety therapy in-person in Topeka, and online throughout Kansas

Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental health challenges faced by people around the world. Their grip can feel suffocating, casting shadows on daily life and making even the simplest tasks seem monumental. Yet, amidst these difficulties, therapy offers a beacon of hope—a structured, supportive pathway toward healing, resilience, and rediscovery of self.

Both depression and anxiety can occur simultaneously, amplifying one another and making it challenging to distinguish where one ends and the other begins. The causes are complex and multifaceted, ranging from genetic predisposition and brain chemistry to life events, trauma, and chronic stress.

Effective treatment for depression and anxiety often entails a combination of approaches. The most suitable pathway depends on the severity and individual preferences.  There are several effective therapeutic modalities for treating depression and anxiety. Each has its own philosophy, techniques, and strengths. Those that I use are (but not limited to):

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - CBT is one of the most researched and effective forms of therapy for both depression and anxiety. It’s based on the premise that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. Negative or distorted thoughts can reinforce emotional distress and maladaptive behaviors. In CBT, clients learn to identify and challenge these unhelpful thought patterns and replace them with more balanced perspectives. Techniques may include journaling, behavioral experiments, exposure exercises, and homework assignments to practice skills outside of sessions.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) - Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT has proven beneficial for people struggling with intense emotions, including those with depression and anxiety. DBT combines elements of CBT with mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills.

We will work together to identify the type of approach that would work better for you.
